The LEGO Technic 4x4 Crawler Exclusive Edition Set 41999 is one of the most genuinely collectible and most historically significant LEGO sets produced in the Technic theme's history, a strictly limited production of 20,000 individually numbered units released on August 1, 2013 that emerged from a fan design competition run by LEGO in 2012, making it the first Technic set produced directly from a consumer submission selected from over a thousand entries, with the winning design contributed by a builder from Russia. The distinction between this and the standard 9398 4x4 Crawler on which it is based is not merely cosmetic: the Exclusive Edition adds an operating motorized winch that allows the vehicle to haul itself out of difficult terrain situations, LED front lights that make the crawler functional in low-light conditions, and the exclusive dark blue colorway that marked the first time this specific blue had appeared in any Technic set, alongside chrome elements on the fender, winch, and muffler, and white line accents on the wheel rims that give the vehicle a distinctive visual identity that stands apart from anything else in the Technic range before or since.
